my intention was to create a symbol for those who fall outside the lines of cis and trans* male and female; for the genderqueer and genderfluid; third gender and agender; etc.

it obviously relies on the mars and venus male and female gender symbols, and is a combination of them in the x: the + of the venus symbol rotated and the > of the male symbol, but the x also denounces them. x has become a symbol of the non-binary, in pronouns and titles; it seemed fitting here. its position on the circle deviates from the positions of the male, female, and trans* symbols, because it is not them, but is not meant to be above them.

this symbol is for anyone who identifies beyond male and female. use it well.

Yesterday my mom posted a picture on Facebook of my 5 year old brother Sam wearing a pair of shoes he picked out for his first day of preschool.

She explained to him in the store that they were really made for girls. Sam then told her that he didn’t care and that “ninjas can wear pink shoes too.”

Sam went to preschool and got several compliments on his new shoes. Not one kid said anything negative toward him about it.

However, my mom received about 20 comments on the photo from various family members saying how “wrong” it is and how “things like this will affect him socially” and, put most eloquently by my great aunt, “that shit will turn him gay.”

My mom then deleted the photo and told Sam that he can wear whatever he wants to preschool, that it’s his decision. If he wants to wear pink shoes, he can wear pink shoes.

Sam then explained to her that he didn’t like them because they were pink, he liked them because they were “made out of zebras” and zebras are his favorite animal :)

For some reason Bart is the pariah of our cats. None of the other three like him. Since I can’t spend all day petting him, he apparently decided to cuddle with the only cat in the house who doesn’t hiss and swat at him, this stuffed cheetah I have decorating the top of the tv. He’ll sit there kneading it looking blissed out, and his not inconsiderable weight has flattened it.

It’s no mean feat getting into all that makeup.

This story has another amazing half: Spectral Motion also gave a tour to Caleb, an inquisitive kid who looks like he had a blast of a time geeking it out in the mechanical shop, with all the props and animatronics.
